Somewhat calmer

The quarter is over, no one is on campus, the weather is springlike and it's almost Christmas. It is very strange. Some random thoughts about museum architecture...
1) Is a museum an "unheimlich" space? Is the strange attraction to museums a compulsive pull of both childhood excitement and the death drive? Is a museum both tomb and womb? Is the real reason for our wandering through the hallways of these ritual spaces only to dwell in the objects of (mostly dead) others? Is it then some kind of wandering wondering? Surely, "cultured" or "elite" is an inappropriate and overused term. Can a museum be something else? Can it be smokestack (Victoria and Albert) instead of ivory tower (British Museum)? or both (Cincinnati Art Museum)? If yesterdays grand palaces are todays ruins, what will become of our grand palaces? What is a hopeful way to practice?
2) What use is all this toward designing new spaces?
